Security blanket
Remember Linus in the Charlie Brown cartoons and how he used to carry his blanket around? Whenever someone questioned him he said, “this is my security blanket”. Meaning it comforted him when he was feeling afraid and insecure. Many addictions are foundationally based on that it's serves to soothe any fears, insecurities and anxieties. For that reason it's hard to break addictions they are tied to our emotions. Addictions are powerful and often overrules morals and common sense. Addictions can cone in any form such as alcohol, food, drugs, and pornography just to name a few. Those individuals depend so much on that “security blanket”, that they forget they have people around them willing help them. The reason the support and help is rejected is because these individuals feel shame, regret and their ego won't let them seek out help. They think the have control of the addiction but in actuality it is the addiction that has all the control.
